Woodwind Quintets

Composed for the now delveloping reed quintet consisting of oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone and bassoon. Three movements allow this effective ensemble to shine. The music is moderately difficult.
1. Iowa Prelude (0'25) An introductory fanfare, perhaps for the Iowa State Fair.
2. Postcard: Manhattan Broadway, 1947 (2'26) Inspired by a color postcard showing Broadway in heavy traffic with buses, colorful signs and
bustling sidewalks

John Holloway's "Wood-Up quick Step" was so popular in it's day that it became the test piece for a famous competition between Ned Kendall, playing the keyed bugle and ..... playing the cornet. In this setting for woodwind quintet, the flute, oboe and clarinet get to show off their virtuosity. Hence, those parts are technically demanding.

Written to prevent potential envy arising from the excluded hornist in the saxophone version. A sort demonstration piece for the standard woodwind quintet. For my colleagues at the Capital University Conservatory of Music.

We needed a piece to demonstrate all of the woodwinds. Something with a little solo for each player - so, I chose the venerable and much arranged "Carnival of Venice" as being relatively familiar to listeners and fun to play for the musicians. These fanfares were composed at different times for different ensembles. The OBOHIO fanfares were written in 1990 to begin concerts by that double reed quartet. We would play them offstage before entering. #2 was written for performance at the International Double Reed Society's conference at the Louisiana State Unversity. Tavern Fanfare was written for a wind octet to play a concert at, you guessed it, a tavern! The Seven Eight Fanfare was composed in 1998 for no particular ensemble or event.

A Passacaglia on a 9 measure progression for the standard woodwind quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, bassoon and horn in F. Composed in 2008 and eagerly awaiting it's first performance!

Four short fanfares that can be performed as encores, concert openers or as interludes between longer pieces. They don't have to be performed in numerical order. They were composed for a variety of ensembles. A passacaglia based on a nine measure progression in which each instrument has a distinctive part. For standard woodwind quintet. Moderately difficult.

Margaret Barstow's short fanfare for woodwind quintet with humorous verses describing concert etiquette spoken by the musicians. A different way to start a program that avoids the usual P.A. announcement.

The first Bagatelle from the Six Bagatelles for piano, Op.126. In the key of G with a short clarinet 'eingang'. Parts for A and B-flat clarinet parts are included. A good introductory work for any program or a fine encore when you wanted to calm down the crowd. Moderately difficult.
