Bassoon Ensemble

Composed to provide some practice in reading and playing sub-metrical rhythms: including 8ths, 16ths, triplet 8ths and a few triplet quarter notes. All rhythms appear on the beat and in syncopated form. The four parts swap soprano, alto, tenor and bass roles. The ranges are from low B-flat (B flat 2) to F above middle C (F4). The music follows a 16 measure blues progression throughout. Far from being a dull study piece, it presents a lively, "hot" result.

Ignaz Jakob Holzbauer (1711 - 1783) composed this Divertimento in C with six short movements. This bassoon parts have no tenor clef. We have also prepared a version of the same work in the original instrumentation for 2 horns and 2 bassoons [1007A]. Total duration 6'30.

Lehar's lovely melody was a favorite for tone development by my teacher, Charles Robert Reinert (1913 - 2007). The arrangement is dedicated to him. Instrumentation revised for 4 bassoons or 3 bassoons and contra (Bassoon 4 part can be played when contra is used, too.)
